Marija and Mirjan Damaška Foundation, based on Article 6 of the Statute of Marija and Mirjan Damaška Foundation and Article 4, paragraph 3 of the Rules of the “Mirjan Damaška Award”, issues the following
Call for Applications
for the “Mirjan Damaška Award”
The Award is bestowed for scholarly paper in the fields of:
- criminal law, criminal procedure and criminal law history
- comparative constitutional and procedural law
- international criminal law and international cooperation in criminal matters.
The paper submitted for the Award must:
- fall within one of the fields for which the Award is bestowed
- meet the criteria for classification as an original scholarly contribution
- be written in Croatian or English
- not have been previously published (in print or online)
- be prepared in accordance with the Guidelines for Authors - https://zaklada-damaska.pravo.hr/natje%C4%8Daji/mirjan-dama%C5%A1ka-award
The Award consists of a certificate, a plaque, and a monetary prize in the amount of 4.000,00 EUR.
Both Croatian and foreign citizens are eligible to apply for the Award.
All individuals – including students, doctoral candidates and retired professors – may submit papers.
Papers must be submitted no later than 31 August 2026, exclusively in electronic form to the following email address zaklada.damaska.nagrada@pravo.hr.

Guidelines for Authors
Paper length and language
Papers should generally should not exceed thirty-two double-spaced pages (57,600 characters, including spaces and footnotes).
Papers may be submitted in Croatian or English.
Each paper must include:
- an introductory synopsis of not more than ten lines
- up to five key words
- a bibliography, alphabetically ordered by author’s surnames
- a summary with up to five key words not exceeding one double-spaced page.
The main text and footnotes must be written in Times New Roman (size 12 for the main text, size 10 for footnotes).
Authors should use the following forms of quotation marks: “ ” and ‘ ’. The use of bold and underline formatting should not be used simultaneously with quotation marks (e.g., not “quote”). Latin terms and abbreviations must always be written in italics (e.g., sui generis, infra, op. cit., ibid.). Footnote numbers should not be italicized and are to be written before a comma, but after a full stop.

Rules of the „Mirjan Damaška Award“

At its meeting held on July 16, 2024 the Board of Directors of the Marija and Mirjan Damaška Foundation (the Foundation), has adopted, based on Article 6 and Article 9 of the Statute of the Marija and Mirjan Damaška Foundation, the following
Rules of the “Mirjan Damaška Award”
Article 1.
These Rules regulate the criteria and the procedure for awarding the “Mirjan Damaška Award” and ensure transparency and fairness in the awarding process.
The terms used in these rules in the masculine gender refer equally to men and women.
Article 2.
The “Mirjan Damaška Award” (the Award) is bestowed for scholarly paper in the fields of:
- criminal law, criminal procedure and criminal law history,
- comparative constitutional and procedural law, and
- international criminal law and cooperation in criminal matters.
Article 3.
The award is bestowed once a year.
Article 4.
The award is bestowed on the basis of a public announcement for the Mirjan Damaška award competition.
The text of the announcement is drawn up by the Board of the Foundation.
The announcement is published on the website of the Foundation, the website of the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb (the Zagreb Law Faculty), the website of the International Association of Penal Law (AIDP) and other appropriate websites.
The Chairman of the Board of the Foundation informs all teaching staff of the Zagreb Law Faculty by e-mail about the publication of the announcement.
The announcement is published every year by February 15.
Article 5.
Croatian and foreign citizens have the right to submit papers for the Award.
All persons, including students, doctoral candidates and retired professors have the right to submit papers.
Members of the Board of the Foundation, members and the Secretary of the Award Committee are not entitled to submit papers for the Award.
Article 6.
Criteria to be met by the paper applying for the Award:
- the paper must be written in the field for which the Award is bestowed,
- the paper must meet the criteria for classifying the paper as an original contribution,
- the paper must be submitted in Croatian or English,
- the paper should not have been previously published (in print or online).
Article 7.
The paper shall be submitted to the Secretary of the Award Committee within the deadline and as specified in the published announcement.
The Secretary shall submit the received papers to the Award Committee under a password and shall inform the Chairman of the Foundation of their number.
Article 8.
All papers submitted for the Award shall undergo a review procedure by two independent and doubly anonymous reviewers in accordance with the review procedure established for Croatian Annual of Criminal Sciences and Practice or Collected Papers of the Zagreb Law Faculty.
Article 9.
After the review procedure, the Award Committee shall select the paper to be awarded on the basis of anonymous papers and reviews.
The Foundation reserves the right, based on the opinion of the Award Committee, not to bestowed the Award if the announcement does not receive papers of required quality.
Article 10.
The Award Committee has five members, two of whom are foreign citizens.
The Chairman of the Award Committee is the Chairman of the Board of the Foundation.
The Award Committee has a secretary.
The members of the Award Committee and the Secretary are appointed by the Board of the Foundation for a period of five years.
Article 11.
The Award Committee decides by a majority of votes.
The decision of the Award Committee on the award of the Award is final. An appeal against the decision is not permitted.
The decision on the bestowal of the Award is published on the websites of the Foundation, the Zagreb Law Faculty and through official communication channels.
Article 12.
The Award consists of a certificate, a plaque, and a cash prize.
The cash prize corresponds to the net amount of one month’s salary of a full professor in permanent position at the Zagreb Law Faculty.
The monetary amount is stated in the published competition in absolute terms.
The award is presented at a ceremony organized by the Zagreb Law Faculty.
Article 13.
The Foundation has the exclusive right to publish the awarded work.
The awarded paper is published in Croatian Annual of Criminal Sciences and Practice or in Collected Papers of Zagreb Law Faculty.
Papers published in Croatian Annual of Criminal Sciences and Practice or in Collected Papers of Zagreb Law Faculty may be subsequently published in other publications with the obligatory note that they have already been published and written for the announcement for the Award.
Article 14.
The Board of the Foundation is responsible for the interpretation of these Rules.
Article 15.
These Rules shall enter into force on the eighth day from the date of their publication on the Foundation’s website.
